Updated median MELD at transplant scores in effect; national median PELD at transplant decreases to 31

Effective Sept. 25, 2024, the liver median MELD at transplant (MMaT) values have been updated for each donor hospital nationwide. The MMaT serves as an index value for most liver transplant candidates with MELD exception scores. The updated data table of MMaT by donor hospital is posted here on the Liver and Intestine resource page of the OPTN website. For comparison, the data table of previous MMaT values (in effect through Sept. 24) is posted here.

The median PELD at transplant (MPaT) value will be 31, effective as of Sept. 25. This is a decrease of two points from the previous value in effect through Sept. 24. The MPaT calculation is based on transplants performed nationwide and is not affected by the location of the donor hospital.

Many MELD exception candidates for liver transplants have their exception score based on the MMaT of the donor hospital where the match is being run (for example, MMaT minus 3 points). This means that MELD exception scores will fluctuate based on liver offers from different donor hospitals, and the specific assigned score will not be known until the match is run for an individual donor.
