Journal article shares preliminary findings from kidney utilization COIIN

An article published in the February 2019 issue of Current Opinion in Organ Transplantation presents recent findings from the three-year OPTN COIIN project. The authors describe the methodology of the quality improvement project and share preliminary results which suggest an approach that supports collaborative improvement can be effective in driving improvement in the transplant community.

The primary aim of the OPTN Collaborative Innovation and Improvement Network (COIIN) was increasing transplantation with a particular focus on moderate-to-high Kidney Donor Profile Index (KDPI) kidneys. The UNOS performance improvement specialists who oversaw the project developed a balanced scorecard approach to monitor process outcomes and measures.

Favorable results were seen in both cohorts, and early findings show that an increase in transplant rate and greater utilization of moderate-to-high KDPI organs were realized in many participating centers.
