Brochure addresses patient questions about kidney evaluation
Published on: Thursday, September 10, 2015
A new resource brochure [Exit Disclaimer] addresses common questions potential kidney transplant candidates have about the process for seeking a kidney transplant evaluation and listing. It was developed to complement educational guidance on kidney transplant referral developed by the OPTN/UNOS Minority Affairs Committee, with additional review and input from the Patient Affairs Committee.
The brochure is most appropriate for people who have recently developed end-stage renal failure or who may soon encounter it. It encourages them to begin considering a transplant evaluation before needing dialysis, ideally when their GFR is between 25 and 30. It also addresses generalities about medical issues that may affect transplant eligibility, while encouraging them to contact a transplant program for a more detailed assessment.
